A slow-witted newcomer of the village was obliged to call uponthe widow of his neighbor who had just died. Standing beforethe casket and consoling the widow, he asked:』I understand hewas in good health. How did he pass away, Mrs.Taylor?』『He was dozing in the living room sofa when all of a suddenthe chandelier crashed on his forehead,』 said the widow.『Good God! What happened to his eyes then?』 the maninquired.『They were all right.』『Thank heaven! How lucky he was in the thick of such terriblemisfortune!』Then it occurred to him that he had made an absurd remark.That realization upset him so much he now became desperate tosay something which would help him make up for the blunder.Yet the more fiercely wrapped up in the thought the more hefound himself at a loss for the words to smooth out thesituation.At that awkward moment he woke up to the cawing of a crow inthe garden. Looking at the bird he determined that it was hereto rescue him out of the predicament, and inquired the widow.『I see you have a crow in the garden. Do you breed that thinghere?』▷ slow-witted : 머리가 둔한, 우둔한 ▷ pass away : 죽다 ▷doze : 졸다▷ all of a sudden : 갑자기 ▷ in the thick of : ∼의 와중에▷ occur : 머리에 떠오르다▷ upset : 당황하게 하다 ▷ absurd : 어리석은 ▷ make up for: ∼을 벌충하다▷ blunder : 큰 실수 ▷ be wrapped up in : ∼에 열중하다▷ at a loss : 당황하여 어찌 할 바를 몰라 ▷ ware up to : ∼을 깨닫다좀 미련스런 사람이 마을로 새로 이사왔는데 이웃에 사는 사람이죽었기에 문상을 가야 했다. 관앞에 선 그는 미망인을 위로하면서『썩 건강하신 줄 알았는데 어떻게 돌아가신 겁니까?』하고 물었다.『거실 소파에서 졸고 계셨는데 갑자기 샹들리에가 이마에 떨어졌지 뭡니까.』『허어, 그럼 눈은 괜찮았고요?』『눈은 까딱 없었어요.』『거참 불행중 다행이었네요.』이렇게 말하고보니 얼빠진 소리를 했구나 싶었다. 그런 생각이 들자 자신의 실언을 얼버무리기 위해 뭔가 한마디 해야겠다는 필사적인 심정이 되었다. 그런데 그런 생각으로 애를 태울수록 점점 더막막해지기만 했다. 어색하기 그지없는 바로 그 순간 정원에서 까악까악거리는 까마귀소리가 그의 주의를 끌었다. 까마귀를 쳐다보면서 그것이 그를 궁지에서 살려내기 위해 와준 것이로구나 싶어미망인에게 한마디했다.『정원에 까마귀가 있군요. 댁에서 기르고 계신가요?』
